2006 International Auto Show Detroit

We headed to Detroit for the 2006 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) along with a few thousand other media types from around the world. And unless you having been living in a bubble for the last few years you obviously know the North American Auto Show is one the most important, if not the most important, automotive shows in the world. Every OEM worth its salt heads to Detroit to unveil and showcase their latest and greatest production models and prototypes. And given that many new prototypes and production vehicles are unveiled at the show every year it gives us an excellent snapshot of what the hottest platforms could or will be in the coming months or years. “More than 60 percent of the exhibits at the 2006 show are new, providing the ideal backdrop for some of the world’s most spectacular vehicle unveilings” commented Richard Genthe, senior co-chairman of NAIAS 2006. Highlights at the show included the Honda Civic Si winning the 2006 Car of the Year award, Mazda’s Kabura concept (a rear-wheel drive, sporty two-door coupe with the stylings much along the lines of an RX-8), the 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder (hitting showrooms in April), and the Nissan Urge concept (which combines, among many other elements, glass in the lower door panels to watch the ground fly past, a glass engine hood to show off the engine cage, and flop-down Xbox 360 display to play games on while you are parked).
