TX2K11 - Event

Quite a few things have changed over the years since the first Texas Supra meet in 2000 (TX2K). Since my first trip nine years ago, there are still more Supras of every generation than you could ever imagine, and you’ll be hard pressed to find a fourth-generation Supra with stock turbos anywhere at the meet, but the mix of cars looks a little different as each year goes by.

With the first MKIV Supras now old enough to smoke, many of the enthusiasts who bought their first Supra in their early 20s have now diversified their automotive holdings. The droves of Vipers, GT-Rs and 911 Turbos throughout the meet are now starting to be encroached upon by Lamborghinis and Ferraris, many of which are also donning turbos.

As usual, Thursday kicked off with a Driver’s Education Event at the Grandsport Speedway road course, a former blimp base that now features almost 2 miles of track. The time attack planned for the end of the day was called off due to a serious off-track excursion. Luckily, both driver and passenger were no worse for the wear.

Friday’s Dyno Day at Lonestar Motorsports Park drew more than 1,200 people through the gates. Six MKIV Supras, a GT-R and a Ford GT cracked the elusive 1,000hp mark, with Rich Homer and Big Daddy Performance Center putting down 1,413 and 1,364 hp, respectively. AMS put down a respectable 1,069 hp on the four-wheel dyno with its GT-R.

Saturday was Test-N-Tune all day at the track. Boostlogic ran a 7.85-second first pass and then broke something in a powerglide. Thanks to Vijay “Big Daddy” Ramkissoon, who had spare parts and a tranny rebuild lesson for them, the guys at Boostlogic were able to get the car fixed in time for Sunday’s main event. Ironically, Big Daddy broke the same part later in the day and no longer had a spare. Fortunately, the crew from BL was able to source the parts locally and return the favor so both would be in the running on Sunday.

Sunday greeted the track with a 20-mph headwind, the exact opposite of the gusty tailwind that had helped spur many records last year. As the morning’s testing finished and the elimination runs began, the wind was still blowing hard. By the end of the day, it was Titan versus Big Daddy in the finals of the Unlimited class. Leaving the line incredibly hard like all weekend, Big Daddy snapped an axle at around the 100-foot mark, sending him into Gary White’s lane. It was a spectacular way to end the weekend, but with great driving by both drivers, they were able to avoid major injury.

Like myself, I’m sure hundreds of fans are already counting the days until next year’s meet. I guess we’ll have to tide ourselves over with the TX2K11 DVD video, which can be picked up at 1320video.com or MVPMotorsports.com.
