The stock STi Brembo brake package, with 12.8-inch front rotors and 12.4-inch rears, has been retained, but the stock pads were swapped for Tommykaira pads that were developed with Endless. With its sticky rubber and competent brakes, you would think the Tommykaira WRX would stop extremely well. It didn't. We recorded a 60-to-0 mph distance of 124 feet, compared with 128 feet for a WRX with much wimpier rubber. We'd blame our test driver, but how hard is it to stand on the center pedal with all your might and let the ABS do the work?
Incidentally, the brakes are the one item you won't be able to order through select Subaru dealers. The rest of the hardware, including the body pieces, the interior knickknacks, and the Tommykaira stickers on the side of the car, are available. However, don't expect any of this stuff to be cheap.
That boy-racer rear wing runs $834, the front urethane bumper, which includes a new grille and lip spoiler, is $1,434, the rear bumper is $1,000 and the side diffusers ahead of the rear wheels cost $300. Want that exhaust? $945. Inside are $1,360 apiece Tommykaira sport seats, which are flat-out fantastic, and an $80 Tommykaira shift knob.
If it was our money, we'd forget all that and order up the 2.2-liter engine kit, which costs $4,300 and can only be purchased through MotoRex (www.motorex.net). It's easily the best part of this ride.
