Fuel enrichment for the augmented airflow is provided by a comprehensive fuel system upgrade, which includes dual in-tank pumps, an adjustable SX regulator, SX filter and 720cc fuel injectors. A Split Second ARC2-GP piggyback fuel computer, GT Pro's proprietary fuel control unit, controls the curves. The system was fine-tuned and interfaced with the HKS EVC Pro boost controller by GT Pro's master air-fuel tuner, Hidenori Yamakawa, who previously performed all tuning and telemetry on Mazda's 787B Le Mans car.
Driveline mods are relatively simple, but according to LaFuente, they were probably the most crucial considerations for this project. The flywheel has been replaced with a lightweight aluminum unit, and the driveline with a slick carbon-fiber piece, but the deciding factor on the car's ultimate performance is RPS's twin-carbon clutch. This clamp is virtually indestructable, says LaFuente, and allows its user to safely build revs when sitting at the line for an incomparable launch when the lights finally drop.
"The hotter you get it, the stickier it gets," LaFuente says. "There's no need to worry about glazing the disc as with organic materials."
The interior has been outfitted with Sparco equipment, including Torino2 seats, a Sparco shift knob and Sparco Lap 3 wheel. Since the supplied seat brackets made the aftermarket buckets sit ridiculously high within the cockpit, GT Pro cut them up and modified them so they sit in a lower, more natural position. So the driver can keep up on goings-on beneath the car's hood, a full array of Dfi gauges-coolant temp, boost, EGT, fuel pressure, oil pressure and oil temperature-have been situated on the dash, three staggered along the top and three in stock gauge locations.
As for the 3000GT's general lack of respect within the performance community, LaFuente remains unfazed.
"I can say this about the car: Even though it's heavy, with its torque range and all-wheel drive, a properly modified 3000GT is unbeatable on the street," he says, the conviction in his voice nothing less than genuine. "It's the ultimate street car, and I know because I also own a Supra and a Skyline.".
