1998 Toyota Supra - Street Car

A Wicked-Fast Street Car Named Desire

Ryan recently went for his NHRA 9-second certification, running his best time of 9.68 seconds at 149.98, which he backed up with 149.98 and 149.99-mph trap speeds. In other words, if an ant had farted at half track, the chute, an NHRA requirement at 150 mph, would have been necessary.

Ryan's other goals for the car domino, of course, into faster and more expensive feats. The first is to have mid-150-mph trap speeds on boost alone. With the exception of a subtle Rod Millen wing and TRD vented hood, the aero package is stock, but a carbon-fiber splitter, which will smooth airflow under the car and help raise the trap speed, is planned. Once there, a Nitrous Express direct-port 125 shot with GenX II goodies will be activated, which like the rest of the powertrain, is controlled by the AEM EMS.

N2O should send the trap speeds into the 160s, which combined with already excellent 60-foot times, should open the door into the high 8s. Once there, Ryan will install a GM TH400 automatic transmission to run 8s all day.

Any car running 9s is impressive. More impressive is a Supra that does it at a plush street weight of 3,585 pounds wet, 3,730 pounds in the burnout box. Ryan tossed the stock seats for Sparco Milanos, and installed Sparco harnesses for safety and rules compliance. The door panels and other interior surfaces were covered in gray suede by 1st Upholstery in Phoenix, 'cause if you're gonna kick ass, you might as well do it in luxury. You might as well lay down thick beats, too, accomplished with an Alpine head unit giving signal to an Xtant 3300C amp, which feeds Boston Pro component speakers and JL subs.

We can't imagine a better car to represent Ryan's shop: The rarest of all Supras, made fast enough to set records, clean enough to win a car show, and be all-around crazy enough to be undefeated. It's a title that grows with every battle waged and whose existence is tenuous. But if champions are bred and not born, this MK IV has both the DNA and pedigree to stay on top.
