The Street - 1990 Nissan 300ZX

Readers' Rants, Raves & Rides

I've subscribed to SCC for 2 years but I've never seen a monster RX-8 with a Renesis. At first, I thought the engine couldn't take it. Now I'm hearing its engine, with STOCK internals, can handle more than 9psi of boost and make near 400hp. The Renesis is stronger than the 13B. Also, Mazda has released a 3-rotor Renesis Engine here in the US. Come on now; if no one has a monster RX-8 for you guys to show, BUILD ONE. Either get an RX-8 and put either a GReddy or SSR turbo on it and see what it takes to blow it up or get an RX-8 and call Mazda so they can deliver you a fresh, brand new 3-Rotor Renesis. After you're done buildin' it, take it to the notorious touge in Japan and beat the touge Monster. Do it for us rotary lovers. Become our next rotary Gods.Samuel RodriguezFrom the Internet

Sounds like a bitchin' idea to us, Samuel. We're not sure if Adrian would approve of further "coveting" of the RX-8, but forget him and the rusty old iron he worships. In fact, we like your idea so much, we're gonna go ahead and do it. We'll be waiting patiently for you to send us a car, a couple of 3-rotors and a few turbo kits. Don't let us down.

Brake Test BreakdownI was reading the Project Miata article in the March 2006 issue and noticed that it was incomplete. This article starts on page 82 and ends with an incomplete sentence on page 85. I would really like to know what the rest of the article was supposed to say.David ChristieWaterford, WI

Enough of the hate mail already! Yes there were mistakes in the Project Miata brake installment. But it was a copy editing error and we've already sent that person packing off to Import Tuner. The very last sentence in the project car write-up should have said "Stiffer spring rates to diminish dive might help too."

The other mistake was a labeling error of the vertical axis for the brake rotor temperature graph on page 85. Each horizontal line should represent a 100 degree Fahrenheit increment instead of the 40.3057234 degrees that the chart indicates. Regardless, the data's right and so are the trends. Next time, I'll make sure to leave it in a logarithmic Rankin scale to keep you on your toes.

Stick It To Me, BabyJust wanted to say that Mike Kojima's "Making it Stick" series is phenomenal! The concepts that you present are insightful, creative, and very timely as more people, like me, are investing good money on suspension mods. Based on the information in your articles, I have begun to re-examine the current suspension on my dedicated track car (coincidentally a 1993 300ZX Twin-turbo), hoping to take advantage of your knowledge and expertise on this topic. I enthusiastically wait for the next issue, hoping it will discuss tuning of shocks!BarryFrom the Internet

Barry, you're in luck. Turn to page 104 to see the latest installment on, you guessed it: dampers. Just don't let Kojima hear you call them shocks.

Hate Mail Of The MonthI've been reading SCC for about 8 years now, and FINALLY got myself a subscription. my excitement fell, however, when I got the Feb. 2006 issue. It's thinner than the toilet paper at work! Thanks guys! Keep up the great work.CharleyFrom the Internet

Love Letter Of The Month I am thrilled with the attitude of the February 2006 edition. Its great to see a move away from swapping JDM engines to just making what is there work better on a budget. Also, I like the addition of more dyno charts. Keep it up as I just renewed my subscription.Randy WatkinsAlameda, CA
