Over Clocking The Mak - Nissan S13 Silvia

Insatiability Breeds A Not-So Drift S13

The Bride seats are tight, but we're not exactly American in girth on this side of the Pacific. A quick look around at the cage reveals a surprise-bolt-in clevises. Interrogation reveals that Miyagawa is a bit of cheapskate. He contends that, with all the stitch-welding and riveting, the chassis is already stiff enough. If he crashes, he could re-use the 10-point cage. It's only welded in a few places. Maybe the car is intruding on his mortgage payments.

Air makes its way through an HKS filter into a Trust TD06 turbo. The in-house welded titanium intercooler piping snakes its way to the GReddy intercooler, then into an 80mm throttle body. Air meets fuel with 740cc/min Denso injectors in a custom Mak titanium plenum. A Tomei head package including 270-degree cams, titanium valve springs bouncing slightly oversized valves (less than a millimeter), and Mak's own ported and polished head manage combustion. Bore and stroke are squared to 87mm. SR22DET, anyone? Gases are sent through a Mak turbo manifold with a Trust wastegate. Finally, a Mak dump tube mates with more titanium piping and connects with an off-the-shelf Fujitsubo titanium canister. A Trust oil pan increases durability and capacity.

A Cusco limited-slip diff and 4:1 final drive mate via a carbon propshaft to a close-ratio HKS transmission: 2.971 (first, 2.094 (second), 1.548 (third), 1.246 (fourth), 1.000 (fifth), and 0.807 (sixth). Power is kept on the ground via TEIN RS coilovers, Ikeya Formula sphericals, and Cusco anti-roll bars. The rest of the OE suspension and cross members are a welded, reinforced mix of S14 and S15 to create the desired five-lug effect. Strut bracing is recycled Cusco, probably bought on Yahoo Japan, or from the previous S13-like we said, cheapskate.

Opening the trunk requires removing four pins to reveal a Wiseco fuel cell with twin Bosch fuel pumps. Catch cans ensure the engine is fed at high corner loads. Initial dyno runs have the car at 550hp, running at 26.1psi. When asked: "How much torque?" the brothers laugh. Apparently, the car starts to jump off the rollers before any accurate reading can be had. Well thought-out tuning and an accurate wideband O2 sensor eliminate the need for a blow-off valve, according to Miyagawa.

Bringing 550 horses to a stop are Endless 12.75-inch rotors with six-piston calipers up front and Brembo 12.8-inch rotors bitten by two-piston calipers out back. Turn-in is improved with Mak's own tie-rod offset kit, eradicating slop.

In fact, there's nothing sloppy about this car. We have a feeling this S13 and Garage Mak will be making quite an impact far beyond the confines of Nagano.
