Not many shops could pull off an overall win at a Time Attack in their first attempt, so how did Buschur Racing do it? By throwing in one of their built 4G63 engines, of course, and by teaming up with EVO suspension tuning guru Robert Fuller of RobiSpec. Under the hood you’ll find a full compliment of Buschur Racing go-fast goodies, all of which are readily available and for sale to owners of 4G63-powered cars. The shortblock features Buschur’s Stage 3 kit that includes JE forged pistons, Eagle rods, ARP rod and main bolts and fresh bearings, all blueprinted and balanced to perfection by their in-house engine builder. This bulletproof lump can support over 800hp, so you know there’s plenty of room to turn up the boost. The cylinder head also received their Stage 3 treatment, a package that uses Buschur Racing bronze valve guides, custom valve springs, titanium retainers, stainless steel valves, and stainless o-rings around each combustion chamber.
With gains over stock in the 10-30 percent range across the board during flow bench testing, it’s obvious the Buschur boys have done their homework when putting together this head package. At the heart of the Stage 3 head is a pair of Revolver 262/264 camshafts, bumpsticks that are well known for their unique lobe profiles that aid in quick turbo spool-up and provide incredible top end power. Bolted to this masterpiece of a longblock is a Buschur Racing ported exhaust manifold and one of their 20G-9-5 turbochargers, installed to maintain stock-like spool-up while eliminating the compressor surge they were experiencing with the EVO 20G-8 unit. This upgraded turbo breathes out through a Buschur Racing 3-inch downpipe and mandrel stainless exhaust system, while the intake charge is cooled by one of their front mount intercoolers. Completing the intake side enhancements is a Buschur-spec 65mm throttle body, ported manifold, and 880cc fuel injectors. The sum of all these top-shelf (but still off-the-shelf) Buschur hard parts is an AEM EMS controlled 402whp and 425 lbs/ft on their in-house MD500SE AWD Mustang dyno.
Those aren’t the stratospheric power numbers you might have been expecting, but Buschur himself stated that the idea behind the engine build was to “keep the car very responsive using a small turbo”. This setup worked extremely well on a smaller track like BeaveRun, but with the longer straightaways at Summit Point and a slipping clutch they got beat by a more powerful car. Suffice it to say that in response to this (and trust us, nobody hates to finish 2nd more than Buschur!), they will be equipping their Magnum MR with a few hundred extra ponies for the ’07 season. On the suspension and driving side of the equation, Magnum was placed in the extra large and highly capable hands of Robert Fuller of RobiSpec fame. Fuller’s package for the Buschur Time Attack EVO started with a set of his RobiSpec shocks and springs based on KW’s ClubSport double-adjustable coilover kit, along with Ground Control caster/camber plates. To further balance the chassis Fuller also bolted up Whiteline 26mm front and 27mm rear anti-sway bars, and to control rear bump better a pair of Whiteline rear bumpsteer correction bushings and lower rear trailing arm bushings were also added to the mix.
Slowing this Mitsu missile is a Stoptech 335mm front rotors, Pagid Orange front brake pads, PF97 rear brake pads, Buschur Racing stainless brake lines, and a Forged brake duct kit. Beyond that, a careful RobiSpec race alignment and corner balancing was conducted before heading to BeaveRun MotorSports Park to kick some Redline Time Attack butt. Oh, and the best way to describe Robi’s driving style, having watched him grab some serious hang time in the Buschur EVO off the hill top jump at Summit Point at speeds in excess of 100mph, is to simply say that the man must have been dropped on his head as a kid, because the fear center in his brain clearly isn’t working! So there you have it. All you have to do to build an EVO that’s capable of Time Attack domination in just four days is spend 18 years building your own highly-respected DSM tuning business from the ground up while developing some of the most potent and indestructible 4G63 engines on the planet and then team up with one of the best EVO suspension tuners and racing drivers on American soil. It’s just that simple.
