This is the third year in a row that UMS Tuning has competed in the Tuner Shootout with its meticulously prepared Mitsubishi EVO VIII, and every year shop owner and ECU tuner extraordinaire Tony Szirka impresses us with his ability to squeeze a little more performance out of himself and his EVO. Of course, having an ace team around him including team leader Richard Yan, tech support by Tabor, and right-hand-man Jeremy Ward does help explain the continued evolution of this seriously quick EVO. As tradition now dictates, UMS once again played host during the dyno competition, where Tony and the UMS crew’s hustle and enthusiasm always make this one of the most enjoyable days of the year for us (yup, breathing uncatalyzed exhaust fumes while watching some of the most powerful tuner cars in the country rip it to redline is our idea of a good time). We were equally impressed to see Tony squeeze an extra 40 whp and 50 wtq out of the 4G64 under his EVO’s hood compared to his ’10 Shootout numbers. Although Tony and his EVO struggled a bit around the autocross course (another UMS tradition? Zing!), he broke into the 10-second bracket during the drag event for the first time, which put UMS in a great position overall heading into the time attack. Conditions and differentials have conspired against the UMS EVO during the time attack in years past, but this year Tony and his EVO brought it home strong, posting a very impressive 1:04.431 (a personal best around Firebird Main), third quickest for the event and locking this rising Mitsubishi star into third place overall. If the trend continues, expect to see UMS fighting for the overall win in 2012.
