MAZDASPEED Motorsports: Mazda2 B-Spec Professional Racing Debut This Weekend - News

Mazda2s to Compete in Both Pirelli World Challenge Championship and GRAND-AM Sportsman Showcases.

When MAZDASPEED Motorsports teamed up with Honda Performance Development in late 2010 to announce the concept of “B-Spec” racing, the primary focus was on club racing. Since then, three different sanctioning bodies have developed entry-level pro classes for thecars. Two of those classes will be making their debuts this weekend, one in Utah, the other in Florida.

The Pirelli World Challenge Championship has added a B-Spec class for three of their race weekends, beginning at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah. The B-Spec cars will be racing with the Touring Car class. The weekend will consist of three sprint races. Shaun Bailey will be competing in the lone Mazda2 in Utah.

GRAND-AM will run their B-Spec races as standalone classes at six weekends beginning at Homestead, just south of Miami, Fla. A pair of Mazda2s are entered for Dan Carney and Ernie Francis.

Next month, the Canadian Touring Car Championship will add B-Spec to their championship, with the class being included in their entire eight race series.

Cars eligible for B-Spec racing include the Mazda2, Honda Fit, Kia Rio, Fiat 500, Ford Fiesta, and Mini Cooper. Other brands are welcome to join if they develop a performance kit and agree to post contingency prize money for competitors.

The Mazda2 B-Spec kit is $2,575. The kit can be ordered directly from MAZDASPEED Motorsports by calling 800-435-2508 Toll Free (U.S. only) or 949-222-2652. Online racer information can be found at www.mazdamotorsports.com

Quotes:
John Doonan, Director, Mazda Motorsports, Mazda North American Operations, noted that, “The reaction to our B-Spec program has been fantastic from racers, media, and multiple sanctioning bodies. We can’t wait to see the grids grow this year on both the professional and club racing level. We feel that we have helped create the next generation of affordableshowroom stock racing.”

Steve Sanders, Competition Manager, MAZDAPEED Motorsports added, “We believe that we have given theaspiring racer a great new option, the most affordable showroom stock class in North America. A racer can buy a brand-new completed racecar from a variety of shops for about $25,000, or do it themselves with a used car for as little as $15,000. They need three things; a new or used Mazda2 street car, the B-Spec parts kit, and a roll-cage and safety equipment.”
