Chrysler Corporation has recently filed documents with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the NHTSA with regards to several new Fiat 500 models. A turbocharged 500, dubbed the 500T Sport should fall about halfway between the standard 500 and the 160 horsepower Abarth model, performance wise (as well as in price). The Abarth trim will also soon be offered in a convertible configuration. The NHTSA document was able to allow the 500T Sport name to be derived from the VIN, as a separate car from several other new trim levels of the base model car that can be inferred by the same document. The CARB documents show California’s approval to certify a 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder as the powerplant for the 500T Sport. Base model powerplants should remain the same as current offerings.
So what does this all mean? Basically this new 500T Sport should be a kind of midway point between the base model 500s and the sporty and nicely styled (but considerably more expensive) Abarth. We have no idea what visual changes will exist on the 500T Sport, but we are certainly anxious to learn more about when this car will be officially released, and how much it will cost. The Abarth convertible should be expected to cost slightly more than the hard top, and the performance numbers should be marginally lower, due to the slight increase in weight and loss of rigidity that’s inherent with a convertible vehicle like the 500.
