HKS' exhaust dwarfs the unit it replaces on our car. However, we suspect the GTX's stock exhaust wasn't this pathetic.

Road/Race's solution to the GTX's restrictive airbox is this creative combination of an HKS adapter, mandrel-bent tube and K&N open-element filter. We wrapped the filter in a nylon stocking to ensure our dirt driving endeavors don't overwhelm it.

Off the car, it's easy to see how simple the Road/Race boost control actually is. It connects to the GTX's stock vacuum system in three places: (A) The short line picks up the pressure source from the GTX's intercooler pipe. Inside this line is a cleverly designed restrictor, which maintains the correct pressure ratio downstream of the T fitting, ensuring the wastegate opens at the desired boost. (B) The wastegate actuator line is plumbed into the stock location as well. (C) This line routes air back into the intake downstream of the airflow meter.

To be effective, Road/Race's boost controller vacuum lines are kept relatively short. The short length of the lines necessitates mounting the bleed valve near the airflow meter in this less-than-sanitary location.

Upgrading the GTX's ECU is a simple matter of removing the old and replacing it with the new. Road/Race provided us with an entire ECU, but it is possible to only upgrade the chip inside.

On the left is the new Probe GT intercooler we sourced from a local junkyard and the additional hose Road/Race fabricated to make it fit. On the right is the pathetic stock GTX intercooler. Note the locator pins on the bottom of the new intercooler. These allow it to use the same lower mount as the stock unit.

Fitment of the Probe GT intercooler in the GTX's engine compartment is relatively simple and requires little fabrication work. Here our new brackets are visible and, as you can see, we've once again chosen function over form. Also visible is the new intercooler hose (left), which Road/Race builds from stock Eclipse turbo parts.

Road/Race recommends NGK BKR7E spark plugs when running big boost on the GTX. According to owner Mike Welch, their gap is also critical and should be set between .028 and .030.
