Built in 1999 to represent Popular Mechanics magazine at the SEMA show, the Civic still looks cool with its Pete Santini flame paint, but it wears a few parts that could use some upgrading.

Under the hood you can see the cars original blue color. The B16 has a DCSports header and intake and a Jackson Racing supercharger.

Big Baer brakes hid behind chrome 17x7 American Racing wheels. These wheels are heavy, but they were chosen back in 1999 because they fit the retro flavor of the car.

With the new forged Center Line RPM wheels, which also measure 17x7, we've shaved close to 10 pounds off each corner of the car. They also look cool, giving the car a racier look.

For style we replaced the factory strut bar, which is functional but ugly, with this beautiful aluminum bar from JIC. Installation takes about five minutes. The tubular aluminum bar looks great, bolts up to the factory bolt locations so no drilling is required and costs $140.

We replaced our old Tokico coil-overs with Tokico's new RAK502 competition kit, which feature Tokico's Illumina R shocks with adjustable damping and ride height. These are the front springs and shocks.

Notice how the new Tokico shock on the right has easily adjustable ride height nuts, while the old unit has a fixed spring perch. Ride height can be dropped anywhere between half and inch and 3-inches. The new shocks also have far superior damping compared to the old, so our Civic now rides and handles better.
