Aug0204__SEMA AWARDS RECORD AMOUNT IN SCHOLARSHIPS
The $110,000 Awarded is Highest in the Scholarship Fund’s 20 Years
DIAMOND BAR, Calif. (July 28, 2004) -- To celebrate 20 years
contributing to the future of the automotive industry, SEMA, the Specialty
Equipment Market Association, awards a record $110,000 in
scholarships. Seventy-five students preparing for automotive industry
careers received individual awards of up to $4,000.
The SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund, established in 1984, has supplied
over 400 students with more than $500,000 in scholarship awards over
the past two decades. Students from 21 states benefited this year, with
academic course work ranging from economics and marketing to diesel
technology.
"We are very proud of our scholarship awards," said Mike Spagnola,
SEMA Scholarship Committee chairman and president of Street Scene
Equipment, Costa Mesa, Calif. "We have been fueling the future of the
specialty equipment aftermarket for 20 years. The SEMA memorial
scholarships help motivate the next generation of industry leaders to
complete their educations and pursue career opportunities available in the
automotive aftermarket."
The program rewards the best and brightest students engaged in studies
leading to a career in the automotive aftermarket or a related field.
Sophomores in 2-year universities or colleges, and students in vocational
or technical schools received $1,000. Graduates and undergraduates
with at least a junior standing at a 4-year school received $2,000 to
$4,000. All students must have a minimum 2.5 grade-point average and
be enrolled in an accredited university, college or proprietary program.
Thirteen scholarships were awarded to relatives and employees of SEMA
member companies, including Access RPM, LaVerne, Calif.; Auto Meter,
Sycamore, Ill.; Blacksmith Distributing, Elkhart, Ind.; GCI, Inc., Nappanee,
Ind.; Grant Products, Glendale, Calif.; Keystone Automotive, Exeter,
Penn.; Performance Tire & Wheel, Mooresville, N.C.; Promotional
Concepts Network, Dearborn, Mich.; Reliable Automotive, Overland Park,
Kan.; Shurco, Yankton, S.D., and Status One Wheels, Carson, Calif.
A new scholarship category introduced by SEMA this year is the Loan
Forgiveness Scholarship Award, given to qualified graduates with
outstanding student loans, who have worked at a SEMA member
company for at least one year. This program was developed as further
incentive for students to seek employment in the automotive aftermarket
upon graduation. Four employees of SEMA member companies received
$1,000 paid directly to their loan company to satisfy outstanding student
loans.
