A twin-disc clutch designed for road racing would take the extra strength of two discs as an opportunity to make the discs smaller, taking inertia off the input shaft and allowing faster shifts. The Exedy clutch is full size, though, for maximum strength and durability. Shifts feel the same as stock.

Both discs use sprung hubs to absorb torsional vibrations from the crankshaft before they reach the gears and make rattling noises.

Little finger springs on the floating center disc help push the stack apart when the clutch is depressed so neither of the clutch discs drag and there's less of the typical twin-disc clutch rattle when you depress the clutch. Also note the thick, vented center disc. This clutch is made to handle some serious heat.

Exedy's metallic friction material is bonded directly to the clutch disc with no cushioning. This should make the clutch very uncivilized, but it doesn't.

The floating plate that sits between the two clutch discs is built like a brake rotor, with radial slots that act like a centrifugal pump, forcing cooling air through the clutch at all times.

The Exedy clutch uses a pull-type diaphragm spring just like the stock one. The stock throw-out bearing snaps into the middle of the spring with a locking collar. Once you lift the collar, the throw-out bearing can be pried out with relatively little effort.

Subaru WRX STI Rear Passenger Side View
Despite our efforts to follow directions, Touring mode looks higher than stock. Sport mode is the one we drive in most of the time, while Track mode has so little travel, it's basically useless. We like to park in track mode.

Leave the STi parked on an uneven surface and this is what can happen. When we parked here, all four wheels were on the ground, but when the Praxis suspension decided to level itself, it actually picked the inside rear tire off the ground. Drive gently on level ground and it will fix itself in less than a minute, but take off like the getaway car and the suspension will stay screwed up until you mellow your driving.

Easily switching modes at the touch of a button is the dream. The reality involves a lot more laying in the road and fumbling with hot aluminum knobs. Carrying a towel in the car helps.

Whiteline's steering rack bushings make such a shocking improvement in steering feel we're campaigning to have a box of 100,000 bushings shipped to Fuji Heavy Industries. The two power steering lines that run below the bushing make installation difficult. We found it easiest to just use a bit of brute force to bend the lines out of the way for a few minutes, then bend them back when we're done.

Prodrive GC 010 wheels are gorgeous, light (16.5 pounds) and presumably very strong. The 43mm offset is 10mm outboard of the stock wheels, though, which causes torque steer and tire clearance issues.

Subaru WRX STI Wheel View Rubbing
This won't happen if you use Subaru's recommended alignment settings, but if you try to run a 43mm offset wheel and 0.5 degrees of rear camber, like we did, the rear tire will smash into the fender. The same will happen if you try running wider tires and conventional alignment with this offset.

Call it cheating if you like, but all it took was 1mm on the rear anti-roll bar and these gummy Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tires to vault our EVO to 0.99g.

The Cusco adjustable rear anti-roll bar is an exact duplicate of the stock bar, just bigger (1mm), bluer, and with three holes on each end instead of one.

Here's a little trick I learned watching EVO engineers change brake pads. Slide the old pad out and use it as a prybar to push the pistons back into the caliper one at a time. This makes room for thicker, new pads and saves you a trip to the toolbox. The Ferodo pads we used as replacements offer better initial bite, more linear feel, better consistency over a wide variety of temperatures, and they better handle the heat of truly stupid driving.
