A close-up look at the valvetrain reveals Honda's famed VTEC setup. The VTEC rocker arm in the center just floats there at low rpm. At high rpm, a pin connects it to the two outer arms, which actually open the valves. Since the center cam lobe opens earlier, opens farther, and closes later, the low-rpm arms are lifted off the low-rpm lobes and the valves follow the big center lobe.

One of the major benefits of the B18C VTEC block is this heavy-duty crank girdle. This beefy aluminum plate reduces bottom-end flex at high rpm. Although it's possible to swap this setup over to an LS block, quite a bit of machining would be involved in order to ensure the proper clearances.

Although both heads share roughly the same dimensions externally, the combustion chamber on the VTEC head (on the right) is slightly smaller, resulting in higher compression and more power. The VTEC head also has larger ports and bigger valves.

The oil port shown here must be threaded to accept this plug. Take care in tapping it correctly as well as ensuring a proper seal on the plug's threads as the head will need to be removed if there are any leaks.

When tapped properly, the plug will thread just below the deck surface of the head as shown here. If it protrudes even the slightest bit, the head will be unable to sit flat.

One benefit of pairing the Hondata unit with the factory ECU is that you can forget about drilling, tapping or even wiring up a knock sensor since it's not required with their system.

If you need it, this blank spot on the upper portion of the block is a perfect location for a knock sensor. Simply drill it out with a 10.9mm bit, tap it to 12mmx1.25mm and thread in the sensor with sealant. Watch out for metal shavings since this is where the oil drains back from the head.

The complete oil line assembly is shown here with the feed side completed. Power Extreme Racing Development offers its no-hassle version of the LS/VTEC oil line kit that includes all of the fittings, the necessary taps and even an LS head gasket. Shown to the right is the new VTEC oil entry location on the head with the new line attached.

New dowel holes must be drilled out to 14mm in diameter on the intake side of the head. This will allow the use of the LS head gasket as well as situate the head properly on the block. The original dowel holes are located on the exhaust side and will not be used.

Don't forget the VTEC head bolts. Two of the LS head bolts are too long and the remaining eight are too short. Be sure to use B-series VTEC bolts like the one shown on the right.

The obvious difference between the VTEC distributor on the right and the LS distributor on the left is the bolt pattern. Our VTEC distributor is from Tuner Toys and is similar to what you'd find accompanying an early-model OBD-0 B16A head. If you opt for the LS unit, the flange on the right side must be lopped off in order to clear the VTEC solenoid assembly. The downside is that only one of the remaining two flanges will line up to the head, almost always resulting in a small oil leak. We suggest going for the new one.

With the GS-R water pump and timing belt installed, you can see the deflection of the timing belt is within spec. Although the LS pump and belt will work, the belt will be just a bit too loose. We opted for a GS-R setup for maximum reliability.

Other than temporarily disconnecting a few vacuum lines from the MAP sensor assembly, the emissions system remains unaltered by the addition of the VTEC head. In our case, the original LS vacuum distribution line was even retained and bolted up to the B16A manifold.
