2006 Honda Civic SI Coupe - Cobb AccessPORT And Access Tuner Race Beta

ECU Tuning Made Easy For The Honda Civic Si.

According to Moose, our test mule owner, "As part of the tune we used the Cobb V1.04 maps, which removed 95 percent of the throttle hang, and we updated the throttle tables to a hybrid table (Civic Type-R and USDM Civic). These changes transformed the dynamics of the car. With the OE tune the car felt as if I was driving with 20 pounds of cotton wrapped loosely around my right foot, but with the changes we've made via the AccessPORT my right foot finally feels like it's going commando on the gas pedal! This allows me to more accurately and precisely control throttle inputs, and by lowering the VTEC cross-over by 1000 rpm the engine is delivering much smoother and more linear power overall. It's also worth noting that the learning function of the factory ECU resulted in LTFT (Long Term Fuel Tables) that were showing an average of 6 percent fueling correction, but after Sasha worked his magic on the fuel maps the LTFT were showing an average correction of just 1.2 percent, or about four times better than we started with."

Our '06 Civic Si owner is clearly a happy camper. Who wouldn't be with the sort of power gains and driveability improvements that have been achieved thanks to the AccessPORT and SG Motorsport's custom tune?

Next, Sasha loaded the owner's custom tune, which produced a graph very similar to the COBB Stage 1 map. According to Sasha, "This tune was a bit rich on fuel, so things got lazy up top from the MAF recalibration. The air/fuel ratio was 11.6 or a lambda of 0.79" [3].

Finally, Sasha installed the Beta version of AccessTUNER Race on his laptop and began constructing a custom tune for our '06 Si. His first reflash actually lost a bunch of power and torque in the 4800-5600 rpm range. "My best guess is the knock sensor is what caused the huge hole when we lowered the VTEC engagement point to 4800 rpm," Sasha says. "Peak power also wasn't where it should be because the ECU was still pulling timing" [4].

Since the AccessPORT allows knock sensitivity to be adjusted, Sasha dialed it back and did some custom cam phasing trimming, but didn't add any ignition advance since the ECU was already pulling some timing with the COBB Stage 1 map. According to Sasha, "Ignition timing was 31-32 degrees throughout most of the high-rpm area, which is pretty bang on. Where we found power on this final revision was with cam timing and by lowering the VTEC engagement point along with a slightly leaner fuel mixture. Final lambda was 0.88 [or 13:1 a/f ratio]." As you can see with this final graph, the SG Motorsport custom tune made significant gains in horsepower and torque across the entire rev range and especially in the midrange and boosted peak horsepower to 185.7, a 6-whp gain over the original baseline and a 4-whp gain over the COBB Stage 1 map [5].
